So you think you’re moving to Mokpo – not so fast

With a week of acclimatising under our belts it was off to Mokpo, a small city on the southwest coast of Korea, to start a new chapter.

Banging their drums with precision and intent by the waterside at Woongcheon Beach Park, Yeosu, these ladies delight onlookers by playing janggo, a hypnotic, rhythmic type of traditional Korean music.

Top five moments in Korea so far

We’ve been in Korea for just over a month so we thought it’s about time to share our top moments thus far.

Without further adieu, here are our top five moments in the land of kimchi, noraebang (karaoke), and soju, a kind of watered-down vodka everyone drinks like water, some of whom until the verge of passing out.

Uncoincidentally, soju and noraebang go together like bangers and mash.

Takoyaki is a Japanese snack in the shape of a little round balls, made of a wheat flour-based batter filled with diced Octopus (tako). Yaki is derived from “yaku” which is one of the cooking methods in Japanese cuisine, meaning “to fry or grill”.

Samgyeopsal is a Korean dish which consists of unseasoned/unmarinated pork belly meat cooked and eat directly from a grill. It is usually served with two sauces: ssamjang (K쌈장) and gireumjang (기름장) sauces, and various Banchan (반찬) accompaniments.

When the tides go out, Woongcheon Beach change into unending tidal flats. Large number of fresh clams dwell in these tidal flats making it possible for locals to dig them out of the soft mud using a spoon or with their barehands.
